What is a Texas longhorn skull?

A Texas longhorn skull is the cleaned and preserved cranium of a longhorn cattle steer, displayed with its distinctive curved horns intact. The horns of a Texas longhorn can span several feet from tip to tip and are individually unique—no two skulls share the same shape, curvature, or color pattern. Each skull is professionally cleaned, sun-bleached or whitened, and the horns are hand-polished to a smooth finish that highlights the natural keratin grain and color variations. As a décor piece, a longhorn skull anchors a room with authentic Western heritage—suitable for ranch homes, lodges, cabins, modern Southwestern interiors, or any space where authentic natural materials are valued. Trahide sources skulls from American cattle and prepares each one in-house, family-owned since 1958.

Why an authentic skull?

Mass-produced replicas are made of resin or composite materials with painted-on grain. An authentic skull is real bone with real horns—heavier, more textured, and with the natural color variations of the animal. The polished horns reflect light differently than synthetic finishes, and the skull itself ages gracefully over decades.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real longhorn skulls?

Yes. Each skull is from an actual American Texas longhorn steer. Trahide does not sell synthetic or replica skulls.

How are the horns polished?

The horns are hand-polished to bring out the natural keratin grain. Polishing is done with progressive grits without dyeing or staining—what you see is the natural horn color.

How big are the horns?

Horn span varies by animal. Each skull lists its specific dimensions. Tip-to-tip spans typically range from 3 to 6+ feet.

How do I clean a longhorn skull?

Dust gently with a dry cloth. Avoid water on the bone. Hand-polished horns can be wiped with a slightly damp cloth and dried immediately. Do not use chemical cleaners.

Where do the longhorns come from?

All longhorns are American-raised cattle. Skulls are prepared in-house by Trahide, family-owned since 1958.
