What is cowhide leather?

Cowhide leather is the tanned or untanned skin of cattle, used as raw material for crafting, leatherwork, drumheads, lacing, and a wide range of finished goods. Cowhide is the most durable and widely used hide in leatherwork because of its consistent fiber density, large size, and broad availability. Medium-weight cowhide rawhide—the untanned form—is firm yet workable: stiff enough to hold shape for drumheads and rigid leather goods, soft enough to be cut, dyed, and shaped by hand. Each rawhide retains the natural variations of the animal it came from: subtle differences in thickness, surface texture, and edge contour are part of authentic cowhide and cannot be replicated in synthetic substitutes. Trahide sources cowhides from American cattle and prepares them using methods refined since 1958 in Peru.

What is medium-weight cowhide used for?

  • Drumheads for djembes, frame drums, and Native American drums
  • Lacing strips for leatherwork, moccasins, and bag closures
  • Rigid leather goods such as sheaths, holsters, and belts
  • Bookbinding and journal covers
  • Crafting projects requiring authentic, workable rawhide

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between rawhide and leather?

Rawhide is untanned animal skin—stiffer, lighter in color, water-sensitive. Leather is rawhide that has been tanned (chemically or vegetable-tanned) to make it durable, flexible, and resistant to decay.

How do I prepare cowhide rawhide for crafting?

Soak the hide in water until pliable, then shape, stretch, or cut as needed. Allow to dry completely under tension if shape retention is required. For drumheads, soak, stretch over the frame, lace tight, and let dry.

Can cowhide rawhide be dyed?

Yes. Untanned rawhide accepts most leather dyes after a light pre-conditioning. For best results, apply dye while the hide is slightly damp.

How thick is medium-weight cowhide?

Medium-weight rawhide is firm enough to hold shape for drumheads and rigid goods, yet pliable enough to cut and form by hand. Each piece varies slightly with the natural thickness of the animal it came from.

Where does the cowhide come from?

All cowhides are American-raised. Hides are processed by Trahide, family-owned since 1958.
